LETHBRIDGE, AB – Jason Gunnlaugson’s spirits remain high heading into the playoffs at the 2022 Tim Horton’s Brier at the Lethbridge ENMAX Centre.

Gunnlaugson may have to fight for a playoff spot, after a 6-5 extra-end loss to top-seeded Brad Gushue’s team.

Gushue clinched first place in Pool B at the Brier Thursday.

Despite the loss, Gunnlaugson says his team played extremely well considering the opposition was the number one team.

“Played a pretty darn good game. I mean, had a few chances, maybe, but realistically we did a good job and you know, we had control till nine and we played a pretty good end, just not perfect placement on my last. And he made a very, very great shot that got them control. And then no mistake with his last.”

To get to an extra-end, Gunnlaugson scored in the 10th end after a measurement by an official.

Gunnlaugson wrapped up the round-robin with a 5-3 record and will have to wait until after Thursday’s final draw to know if he’s playoff-bound.

Regardless of the outcome, he thinks his team has played well all week.

“I think we’re playing amazing. I mean, that is the best team in the nation all year. I mean, they’ve lost twice domestically all season. So I mean, the fact that we made them through a pretty darn hard shot to win is a great sign for us, and we played pretty good most [of] those ends.”

“I think we’re feeling great and we just hope we get to be in this mix. And, you know, we’re feeling comfortable playing everybody. I mean, if you play a game like that against these guys, you can beat anybody in the field.”

Both other teams in the hunt for the playoffs won their morning draws as Manitoba’s Mike McEwen defeated Jamie Koe of the Northwest Territories 7-3, and British Columbia’s Brent Pierce won 9-2 over Nunavut’s Peter Mackey.

The final draw for Group A is on Thursday afternoon with Gunnlaugson hopeful his team can make the playoffs starting Friday.
