LETHBRIDGE, AB – An investigation is underway into oil reportedly being in the Old Man River.

The City of Lethbridge says an oily substance was discovered in the Oldman River last week.

At Peenaquim Park, near the base of the coulees on Tuesday, March 15, city officials were made aware of the report.

The city says the source or cause of the oil spill into the river has not yet been identified, but it did not come from the City of Lethbridge Storm Sewer system.

For the cause of the spill, an investigation is ongoing. The City of Lethbridge release states the spill clean-up crew is working away.

“Initial reports show the substance looks to be motor oil and the City is fully cooperating with the SWAT Consulting Inc. environmental response team and Alberta Environment and Parks to follow all cleanup procedures and strategies.”

“Cleanup has gone well and a majority of the oil substance has been removed,” the release adds.

The clean-up will reportedly be completed later this week. There are no additional details at this time.
