LETHBRIDGE, AB – UPDATE: ULFA accepts new agreement, bringing an end to strike

Original Story:

The end of a nearly-six-week strike could be on the horizon.

The University of Lethbridge Faculty Association (ULFA) is holding a ratification vote on a proposed collective agreement between it and the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors (The Board).

The two sides were in enhanced mediation last week as David Jones sought to bring educators and administration together.

In his mediator’s report, dated March 18, 2022, Jones provided his recommendations for what a new agreement should entail.

“I wish to emphasize that my recommendations are not an evaluation of the parties’ positions. I am not appointed as an interest arbitrator who would assess the parties’ positions against various legislated factors and issues a decision. My task has been to listen carefully to the interests of the parties as articulated in their proposals, submissions and discussions, and then to offer recommendations that reflect a compromise that has a reasonable chance of acceptance by both sides in the present time and context.”

Jones recommended a 1.25% salary increase for faculty members, professional librarians, instructors / academic assistants on April 1, 2023, as well as another 1.5% raise on December 1, 2023.

He also suggested a retroactive 0.5% increase as part of a “gain sharing formula” and a flexible benefits spending plan.

“The parties have worked very hard to bring this matter to [a] conclusion. I strongly recommend ratification of the new collective agreement in accordance with their agreements and incorporating my recommendations.”

At the time of publication, we are not able to see what, if any, of Jones’ recommendations are in the proposed collective agreement.

The Board has already voted to ratify the terms of the collective agreement on their end. In a brief statement, The Board says their vote “was based on recommendations contained in the mediator’s written report.”

Results are expected to become available Monday evening. We will have more details following the conclusion of the ratification vote.

ULFA members have been on strike since February 10, 2022, after they and The Board have been unable to agree on many outstanding issues.
