U of L track and field athletes earn seven medals at Canada West Championships

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track and field team was very successful at the 2022 Canada West Championships.

Athletes competed at the showcase from Friday, March 18 to Saturday, March 19 in Winnipeg and came back to Lethbridge with seven conference medals.

Pronghorns throwers highlighted the trip to Manitoba, taking five of six medals in the weight throw events across two genders.

On the first day of the event, the Pronghorn men swept the podium in the weight throw. Andreas Troschke successfully defended his 2019 gold medal with a furthest throw of 18.16 metres.

Xavier Crosby earned silver with a throw of 17.38 metres. Brayden Klippenstein won bronze with a throw of 17.37 metres. All three competitors threw new personal bests in the meet.

For the women’s weight throw, Caitlyn Bailes won silver with a new best toss of 16.78 metres. First-year Pronghorn Jinaye Shomachuk finished with a bronze with a furthest throw of 16.63 metres, also a new personal best. Shomachuk finished in fourth place in the shot put event as well.

Freshman Lauchlan Irish won two silver medals in his first Canada West Championship appearance. Irish finished second in the triple jump with a jump of 14.69 metres. In the high jump, the first-year athlete set a new personal best while clearing a high of 2.00 metres, the same height as the gold medalist from the University of Alberta. Irish finished second after having more missed attempts.

OTHER NOTABLE PRONGHORN FINISHES

  • Mikayla Dickenson finished fourth in the long jump, as well as seventh in triple jump.
  • Thrower Parker Allen finished fifth in the weight throw with a personal best toss of 15.68.
  • Kimoya Ewards placed fourth in the 60 metres and seventh in the 60 metre hurdles.
  • Madeline Szabo and Kyah Sluik finished fifth and seventh respectively in the women’s weight throw.
  • Clayton Wong and Jake Jessup finished seventh and eighth respectively in the men’s triple jump.
  • Makenzie Kennedy finished sixth in the women’s triple jump.
  • Cayla Stimson placed sixth in the women’s long jump.
