LETHBRIDGE, AB – A major Canadian bank is giving back to a local program that aims to help traditionally marginalized populations.

Scotiabank has invested $150,000 into Lethbridge College’s Ready to Connect program, with funding to be shared over the next three years.

Maria Saros, V.P. and Global Head of Community Investment Strategy and Communications at Scotiabank, says supporting groups such as Indigenous peoples, women, visible minorities, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and people with disabilities is important to the company.

“We are proud to support the Ready to Connect program and provide underrepresented students with the necessary tools and skills to succeed in their studies and future career. We understand the importance of this as a means to achieve financial self-reliance and independence.”

Grade 12 students who belong to these groups can be nominated by a high school counsellor or nominate themselves.

Those admitted to Ready to Connect will work with Lethbridge College to explore their career options and ensure that they meet admission requirements.

Nancy Russell, Dean of Student Affairs at Lethbridge College, says they will also be paired with student mentors at the college who align with their self-identified demographic.

“This program creates a structured pathway and environment for students throughout their journey at Lethbridge College. With continuous guidance, strong mentors, and financial support, students will be well prepared to make the transition from high school to college and college to industry.”

Students in Ready to Connect will be supported throughout their students and will receive bursaries for completing program activities that are designed to complement their in-class learning.

The first intake of 20 students is planned for September 2022.

Over the next three years, 60 students are estimated to take part.
