CLARESHOLM, AB – A 28-year-old man faces multiple charges after the RCMP responded to a break-and-enter at a home near Claresholm.

At 11:25 a.m. on Monday, March 28, Claresholm RCMP received a complaint from a 20-year-old woman. She told Mounties that she had found an unknown male suspect in her home, located on a farm about six kilometres north of Claresholm.

It is alleged that during a verbal altercation, the suspect exited the home and tried to steal a Chevy pickup truck that was parked in the front yard. The RCMP says the suspect failed at stealing that vehicle, so he re-entered the home and stole keys for a 1994 Cadillac Deville, which was also parked in the yard.

According to Mounties, the suspect stole that vehicle and left the scene. Members from the Claresholm, Fort Macleod and Nanton RCMP detachments responded and several minutes later, the suspect and vehicle were seen near Nanton. The suspect was eventually confronted by RCMP officers at a gas station in Nanton and taken into custody.

Further investigation found that the suspect was in possession of drug paraphernalia, small amounts of suspected crack cocaine, was breaching a Release Order, and did not have a driver’s license. Mounties noted that the investigation found that the suspect has unknowingly spent the previous evening in the victim’s yard.

28-year-old Alexander Harsanyi, of no fixed address, faces the following charges:

  • Mischief contrary to Section 430(1)(d) of the Criminal Code;
  • Break and Enter to Dwelling House and Commit Theft contrary to Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code;
  • Theft of Vehicle contrary to Section 333.1 of the Criminal Code;
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order Conditions contrary to Section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Possession of Crack Cocaine contrary to Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • Operate Motor Vehicle Without Drivers Licence contrary to Section 52(1)(a) of the Traffic Safety Act; and
  • Operate Vehicle with No Insurance contrary to Section 54(1)(a) of the Traffic Safety Act.

Harsanyi was taken before a Justice of the Peace for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and was released from custody on a $4,000 Promise to Pay Release Order with Conditions.

He is scheduled to appear in Fort Macleod Provincial Court on April 13, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
