Paxlovid to be available in more Alberta pharmacies

Mar 30, 2022 | 4:17 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Eligible Albertans will soon have an easier time accessing an antiviral COVID-19 medication.

Starting on April 1, 2022, a greater number of pharmacies across the province will carry Paxlovid, the first COVID-19 treatment approved by AHS that can be taken orally at home.

Initially, it was only offered at 135 pharmacies due to limited supply.

Health Minister Jason Copping says that supply has since increased.

“Having a reliable supply of at-home treatments for COVID-19, such as Paxlovid, is critical to lowering the risk of severe outcomes for those who are unvaccinated or have serious medical conditions. However, the best protection continues to be vaccination. Rather than waiting to need treatment, I continue to encourage Albertans to get ahead of COVID-19 and get vaccinated, including boosters.”

Only Albertans meeting certain criteria are eligible to receive Paxlovid. Those who meet the criteria are asked to call Health Link at 1-844-343-0971.

Health Minister Jason Copping says you are not supposed to contact pharmacies directly about Paxlovid.

The use of this medication must be started within five days of the onset of COVID-19 symptoms.

A list of pharmacies that will carry Paxlovid as of April 1 can be found here.
