MONARCH, AB – The playground in Monarch is receiving upgrades this year, with the design inspired by ideas from residents in the hamlet.

In January 2022, Lethbridge County asked Monarch residents to view a proposed design and provide their feedback on what equipment they wanted to see most at the playground. The design was revised after staff received residential feedback.

The finalized design has elements for children of all ages to enjoy. The design includes:

  • Swing sets with a small seat for younger children;
  • A variety of climbing equipment;
  • Several slides;
  • Overhead bars;
  • Expressions swing;
  • Merry-go-round;
  • Digger and spring riders; and
  • Activity panels.

Additional features to the playground include picnic tables, benches, a bike rack and garbage cans. The area will also see upgrades to the basketball and tennis courts with:

  • Sealcoating on the tennis court;
  • New basketball hoops and nets; and
  • Painting keys on the basketball court.

The project is part of Lethbridge County’s 2021 capital budget. It was moved to 2022 to allow staff to gather feedback from residents.

Construction is slated to start in May or June, depending on weather and the availability of materials. Residents can visit Lethbridge County’s website for updates on the project’s timeline.
