COVID deaths and hospitalizations rise in Alberta over the last week

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest weekly report on COVID-19. The numbers reported in this update reflect data from April 12-18, 2022.

In that time, 6,125 Albertans tested positive for a daily average of 875.

24,745 tests were conducted over the last week, meaning the positivity rate was 24.8%.

In the South Zone, there were 391 positive tests, or 55.9 each day.

159 people in Lethbridge (23/day) contracted COVID as did 106 (15/day) in Medicine Hat.

Since the same time last week, 49 Albertans died from COVID, averaging out to seven per day. This includes 18 in the Edmonton Zone, 12 in the Calgary Zone, nine in the Central Zone, six in the North Zone, and four in the South Zone. To date, 4,190 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone include three in Medicine Hat and one in South Lethbridge.

Provincially, 1,126 patients are currently hospitalized including 43 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks an increase of 73 for hospitalizations but a drop of five for ICU compared to last week’s report.

  • Calgary Zone
    • 224,844 cases
    • 362 in hospital, 18 in ICU
    • 1,142 deaths (12 new)
  • Edmonton Zone
    • 178,731 cases
    • 392 in hospital, 21 in ICU
    • 1,629 deaths (18 new)
  • North Zone
    • 61,339 cases
    • 115 in hospital, zero in ICU
    • 512 deaths (six new)
  • Central Zone
    • 57,018 cases
    • 180 in hospital, two in ICU
    • 534 deaths (nine new)
  • South Zone
    • 36,315 cases
    • 77 in hospital, two in ICU
    • 373 deaths (four new)

  • Lethbridge – 12,533 cases (159 new), 98 deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 4,820 cases (64 new), 13 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 3,895 cases (56 new), 56 deaths (one new)
    • North Lethbridge – 3,827 cases (40 new), 29 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 7,615 cases (106 new), 95 deaths (three new)
  • Brooks – 2,667 cases (10 new), 32 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,778 cases (13 new), 23 deaths
  • Cardston County – 2,741 cases (33 new), 47 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,691 cases (15 new), 19 deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 1,238 cases (10 new), 14 deaths
  • Cypress County – 1,222 cases (12 new), six deaths
