Husky fined $600K for 2018 pipeline spill in Saskatchewan

NORTH BATTLEFORD, SASK – An Alberta energy company has been issued a six-figure fine for spilling a substance in central Saskatchewan.

In 2018, approximately 2.8 million litres of process water leaked from Husky Oil Operations’ Westhazel pipeline into the environment near the Town of Turtleford, about 89 kilometres north of North Battleford.

Process water is a byproduct of oil and gas production and is typically high in salt content.

The process water travelled around 450 metres over land and entered the Englishman River, a fish-bearing tributary of the North Saskatchewan River.

Environmental Enforcement Officers observed dead vegetation along the path and determined that the process water was harmful to fish.

On April 29, 2022, Husky plead guilty to one count of depositing a deleterious substance into water frequented by fish under the Fisheries Act.

The company was issued a fine of $600,000 by the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan. The money will go to the federal government’s Environmental Damages Fund.
