Lethbridge’s seasonal rattlesnake relocation program now underway

Apr 30, 2022 | 9:05 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The seasonal rattlesnake mitigation program is officially underway in Lethbridge.

The program is put in place to help reduce the number of encounters between snakes, pets and pet owners. Residents may encounter prairie rattlesnakes when exploring the coulees or occasionally in urban areas of the city.

Between early May and December each year, when rattlesnakes are out of hibernation, rattlesnake consultant Ryan HeavyHead relocates rattlesnakes on public and/or private property where there is a concern for public safety.

The snakes are relocated back to their permanent natural habitat and away from people and their pets.

The Province of Alberta Wildlife Act prohibits anyone from owning/harassing wildlife, including rattlesnakes and bull snakes. Therefore, the City of Lethbridge’s mitigation program encourages residents to phone for help instead of trying to move rattlesnakes themselves.

Injuring wildlife or damaging their habitat is illegal in the province.

Anyone needing to relocate a rattlesnake from an urban or recreational area is asked to call 403-332-6806. To report a rattlesnake sighting, citizens can contact the Helen Schuler Nature Centre at 403-320-3064.
