Lethbridge County launches new online fire permit application system

May 3, 2022 | 11:33 AM

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – Residents in Lethbridge County have a new way to access fire permits.

A new online application portal has been launched. It includes a text messaging feature that will help boost communication between the County and permit holders.

The portal can be accessed at the Lethbridge County website or via the Lethbridge County app, available for free in the Apple and Google Play stores.

When a resident enters the online portal from the County website or app, they will be taken through the rules and guidelines for burning responsibly. The County noted that the goal is to eliminate any confusion as to what materials can be burned and under what circumstances.

Once a permit has been approved, it will be texted to the permit holder’s mobile phone. Text messages will be sent when the permit expires after seven days and when a Fire Ban or Fire Restriction is issued by Lethbridge County.

The previous online application form did not have texting functionality. Permits could also only be issued during office hours. The new system allows residents to apply for a fire permit any time of the day, including on weekends and holidays.

Lethbridge County Chief Administrative Officer Ann Mitchell said, “our previous online form was not as comprehensive as the new application portal and presented some challenges for staff and applicants.”

“Moving to a more comprehensive system will allow our Fire Services Manager to ensure residents applying for a permit fully understand the regulations around burning and are complying with our bylaws. We recognize the importance of efficiency and anticipate that the time it takes to receive a permit will be significantly reduced.”

Applications must be made through the new online portal. Staff can also assist with applications in-person at the County’s Lethbridge office, located at #100, 905 4 Avenue South.

Fire permits are required by bylaw for open burning but are not required for recreational campfires or burning barrels.
