SCAM ALERT: Texts from “Service Alberta” for fake $300 rebates

May 4, 2022 | 3:18 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Albertans are being warned of a new scam making the rounds.

Consumer Protection Alberta (CPA) says in a social media post that scammers are sending out text messages, informing people of $300 rebates from the Alberta Government, which are fake.

The texts, claiming to be from Service Alberta, say, “Albertans who have been feeling the pinch of inflation will receive a $300 rebate from the provincial government. The rebate is meant to ease the financial burden of increased living costs. You may apply here:” A hyperlink follows.

Anyone who receives this message or any other electronic message claiming to offer energy rebates should not click the links or provide any personal or banking information.

The text scam comes at a time when the Alberta Government is working to establish real utility rebates.

In April 2022, legislation was introduced that would enable rebates for more than 1.9 million households and businesses.

Electricity customers are expected to receive $150 this summer, while a program for those using natural gas should launch in the fall.

For now, however, the real rebates have not been approved and there is nowhere people can apply.
