LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man has been found guilty on several charges in relation to a series of sexual assaults.

In Lethbridge Provincial Court on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, the decision was read out for Sohil Bindra, 35.

There were four complainants in this matter, with incidents occurring between March 2018 and February 2020. Their names cannot be released due to a publication ban.

In the trial, the women recounted attending local nightclubs. Three of them testified that they had drinks offered to them by Bindra.

They each recalled passing out shortly afterward and waking up to being sexually assaulted by Bindra.

The judge said there were a few common threads amongst three out of the four incidents:

  • That Bindra had used the substance gamma-Hydroxybutyric (GHB), which is known to cause unconsciousness, as well as negative effects on long-term memory and working memory. Bindra was known to have purchased GHB.
  • That three of the four complainants had similar symptoms after consuming drinks offered to them by Bindra
  • That three of the four complainants were not intoxicated enough on alcohol alone to experience the symptoms they had.
  • That the symptoms experienced by the three who had consumed the drinks were consistent with the symptoms of GHB use.

While the judge noted that there is a small amount of doubt in some of the individual cases due to the victims’ lack of memory, the fact that they all had similar experiences involving Bindra makes their cases much stronger.

It also forms what the judge said was a pattern of consistency in Bindra’s behaviour.

Additionally, Bindra was deemed to not be a credible witness due to several inconsistencies in the statements he made to police and in court.

Bindra was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault, three counts of administering a stupefying or overpowering drug, one count of break and enter to commit a sexual assault, one count of possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), and one count of possession of a controlled substance (GHB).

One charge of sexual assault was dismissed.

A date for sentencing is expected to be set later this month.
