LETHBRIDGE, AB — The weekend is finally here and a number of events are happening around the city. Here are just a few of the events you can look forward to this weekend.

The Big Truck Petting Zoo is returning to Lethbridge after being postponed for two years. From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Lethbridge Library Crossings Branch on Saturday, May 14, 2022, those who are interested can climb aboard and have their photos taken inside some of the vehicles and equipment used by the city.

A firetruck from the Lethbridge Fire Department and the Bookmobile from the Lethbridge Public Library will also be on site.

If you’re looking for an event with a lot of action on Saturday, the Blackfoot Canadian Cultural Society will be showcasing various dances and cultural practices at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club (RMTC) to kick off the first Warrior Relay race of the season.

The Warrior Relay races showcase individual riders racing bareback on thoroughbred horses, and after the rider completes a lap, the rider must jump from one horse to another before completing the next lap. In total, the single rider transfers to three different horses in three laps.

The RMTC has nine other races happening Saturday as well. Horses will be thundering down the track between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and the Blackfoot dancing ceremony will occur at 3:45 p.m. just before the Warrior Relay.

If heavy equipment and horse racing aren’t your thing, you can make your way to the Lethbridge Public Library Main Branch for the Mega Book Sale – The Sequel.

More than 300 boxes of books will be on sale at the Main Branch, Saturday May 14 and Sunday May 15, 2022. There’s bound to be something for a reader at any level. Proceeds from the sale help the Lethbridge Public Library enhance its collections and programs.

Tickets are just $5 dollars, and when you redeem your ticket you get a free bag of books, DVDs, and/or CDs.

Also on Sunday, May 15, 2022, the Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club (TUDC) is hosting a special benefit concert for Ukraine.

The concert is taking place at the Genevieve E. Yates Memorial Centre located at 1002 4 Avenue South. The event is set to be a colourful and lively showcase of dances, costumes, and music from various regions of Ukraine. It will be presented for all of Lethbridge to enjoy, and will include performances by the TUDC, the Bridge Brass Quintet, and the Interludo String Duo.

TUDC invites you to listen to some great music and experience the skillful dancers as they take to the stage for everyone again. The hope is that many will come to watch a great show while being able to provide much needed support for Ukraine at the same time.

Tickets are by donation, with 100% of the proceeds going towards humanitarian aid for Ukraine.

Night owls don’t fret, there’s an event for you too.

Sunday night at Popson Park, 950 60 Avenue West, the Lethbridge Astronomy Society will be hosting an event to watch the total lunar eclipse.

Those attending the event are asked to bring a warm drink and dress for the weather, as the eclipse is set to begin at 9:30 p.m.

Be aware that if conditions are cloudy, the evening event will be cancelled. However, if the weather cooperates, you can view this unique lunar event — no equipment required!
