Second Fort Macleod councillor steps down in less than a month

FORT MACLEOD, AB — Fort Macleod had its second town councillor announce their resignation in less than a month.

Councillor Kristi Edwards put in her letter of resignation on Friday, May 6, 2022, to inform council of her departure, which is set for June 30, 2022.

Edwards was first elected to council in 2017 and was recently re-elected in the fall of 2021.

According to a release from the Town of Fort Macleod, Edwards has accepted a job offer in a new community, requiring she and her family to relocate.

The first councillor to offer their resignation from the Town of Fort Macleod’s council was Werner Dressler. Dressler was elected to town council in 2013 after serving eight years as the town’s only peace officer.

Dressler addressed council in a meeting on April 25, 2022, saying he would be stepping down due to medical reasons. Werner suffered from a stroke in 2018 and said stepping down was in his best interest.

“This is not taken very lightly, I appreciated my time here and have chosen to resign for medical reasons,” Werner said. “This is the best course of action for me both mentally and physically, for both my family and myself.”

The Town of Fort Macleod will be holding a by-election for the two vacant councillor positions on Oct 24, 2022, at the G.R. Davis Administration Building Gymnasium. There will also be advance voting taking place on October 20, 2022.

Councillors Werner and Edwards’ last day on council will be June 30, 2022.
