COVID cases and hospitalizations trend down in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province has released its latest weekly report on COVID-19. The numbers reported in this update reflect data from May 10-16, 2022.

During that time, 3,614 cases were confirmed across the province for a daily average of 516.

18,349 tests were conducted over the last week, meaning the positivity rate was 19.7%. Health Minister Jason Copping stated earlier this week that the falling positivity rate was another sign that Alberta is moving past the BA.2 wave of COVID-19.

In the South Zone, 173 people tested positive, or approximately 25 each day. That includes a total of 56 cases in Lethbridge, or eight per day.

Over the last week, 61 Albertans died from COVID including 24 in the Calgary Zone, 17 in the Edmonton Zone, 10 in the North Zone, eight in the Central Zone, and two in the South Zone. To date, 4,452 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The two deaths in the South Zone were for residents of the M.D. of Taber and the M.D. of Pincher Creek.

Provincially, 1,165 patients are currently hospitalized with COVID including 42 who have been admitted to intensive care. This marks deceases of 60 for hospitalizations and five for ICU compared to last week’s report.

  • Calgary Zone
    • 233,414 cases
    • 452 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 1,228 deaths (24 new)
  • Edmonton Zone
    • 185,355 cases
    • 369 in hospital, 19 in ICU
    • 1,716 deaths (17 new)
  • North Zone
    • 62,809 cases
    • 108 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 541 deaths (10 new)
  • Central Zone
    • 58,916 cases
    • 161 in hospital, three in ICU
    • 575 deaths (eight new)
  • South Zone
    • 37,628 cases
    • 75 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 392 deaths (two new)

  • Lethbridge – 13,065 cases (56 new), 106 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 4,957 cases (16 new), 14 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 4,100 cases (16 new), 63 deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 4,018 cases (24 new), 29 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 7,905 cases (51 new), 97 deaths
  • Brooks – 2,731 cases (11 new), 33 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 2,845 cases (11 new), 24 deaths
  • Cardston County – 2,788 cases (three new), 48 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 1,744 cases (16 new), 20 deaths (one new)
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 1,302 cases (nine new), 15 deaths (one new)
  • Cypress County – 1,254 cases (three new), seven deaths
  • County of Warner – 1,170 cases (seven new), nine deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 875 cases (seven new), eight deaths
