Permits no longer required to allow dogs on dining patios

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Pet owners can parade their pooches on patios permit-free.

A change has been made to food regulations under the Alberta Public Health Act, meaning that eateries will no longer need to seek approval from Alberta Health Services (AHS) in order to allow dogs to be on outdoor patios.

Health Minister Jason Copping says other jurisdictions have made similar provisions and that it was time for Alberta to get on board.

“This change is long overdue and will let AHS public health inspectors focus their efforts where they are needed most – supporting restaurants, providing advice, and making sure public health requirements are followed,” says Shandro.

Dr. Laura McDougall, Senior Medical Advisor for AHS, says there are a couple of rules dog owners should be aware of before bringing their K-9 pals with them.

Dining establishments, such as restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, are not required to offer dog-friendly patio spaces, so dog owners are encouraged to check with the eatery before attending.

Non-service dogs are still prohibited from entering indoor food-handling areas.

Customers will be required to have their dogs on a leash or in a carrier and have physical control over them at all times.

“AHS is supportive of dog-friendly patios as long as it’s being done in a safe manner,” says Dr. McDougall. “We will continue to be available to restaurant owners and Albertans to provide guidance and support in the establishment and maintenance of dog-friendly patios as needed.”

Operators of food establishments are encouraged to view an information sheet from AHS regarding dogs on patios.
