LETHBRIDGE, AB – An apparent case of vandalism has left a dark mark on the new LGBTQ+ crosswalk in downtown Lethbridge. The City of Lethbridge has confirmed that tire track marks have been found on the walkway.

The crosswalk was installed in early May on the west side of the intersection at 3 Avenue South and 7 Street South, along with a crosswalk showcasing the transgender colours on the east side of the intersection.

The installation of the crosswalks was made possible thanks to financial support from the Lethbridge Pride Fest Society.

The permanent paint used for the walkways was said to be able to withstand daily wear and tear and last up to 10 years.

Now, the crosswalk will have to be repaired.

The City of Lethbridge issued a statement to LNN, saying “we understand how many members of the community love and embrace these beautiful crosswalks and the disappointment we share in people vandalizing them.”

The statement continued, “We are aware of the marks and are working with the contractor who installed the crosswalk to see how they can be removed.”

Meanwhile, the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has not received a report of vandalism in relation to the tire track marks, and a spokesperson said because of this, the LPS is not involved in any investigation into the matter at this time.
