DynaLIFE to open more lab service centres across Alberta

Jun 2, 2022 | 12:01 PM

CALGARY, AB Starting December 5, 2022, DynaLIFE Medical Labs will begin providing community and non-urgent hospital lab services to communities across Alberta.

On June 1, 2022, a new service agreement was finalized between DynaLIFE, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), allowing DynaLIFE to officially take over lab services from APL. DynaLIFE will provide high volume community testing to cities and towns, in addition to non-urgent hospital lab services.

Alberta’s Health Minister Jason Copping said, “lab services are critical to our health system.”

He explained that 80 million lab tests are being done each year, while also growing by more than a million and a half each year, which shows the province’s need for a comprehensive, highly efficient lab system that combines the advantages of a publicly-funded healthcare system with a range of providers.

“This change will also let us divide the roles better across the whole system and reduce overlap,” said Copping.

Meanwhile, Alberta Precision Labs (APL) will continue to provide lab services acute care hospitals, in addition to providing services to small rural and remote communities, according to Mauro Chies, interim president and CEO, Alberta Health Services.

Chies added that APL will focus on the remaining aspects of the lab system, including research and innovation in high priority areas, such as genetics and genomics, transfusion and transplantation medicine, molecular pathology, and public health testing like the COVID-19 testing program.

Jason Pincock, president and CEO of DynaLIFE Medical Labs, said DynaLIFE will also be building more sites in communities across Alberta. He said that places like Okotoks, Lethbridge, and Grand Prairie will all receive community collection sites.

“This partnership between the public and private sector can only be possible here in Alberta.” said Pincock. “It’s built on a long history of trust and working together. It’s been on a history of valuing each other and really leveraging the strength that both the public and private sector can bring to the table.”

In response to transition and employment concerns, DynaLife said no job losses will occur.
