LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is using $500,000 to construct a new play space in Galt Gardens in the city’s downtown core. A total of $125,000 will come from the municipal government, and the remaining $375,000 in funding will be provided by the federal government.

According to the city, the grant funding will be used for the construction of a new inclusive and accessible play space in Galt Gardens that aims to increase the vibrancy and vitality of downtown Lethbridge.

In addition to bringing people together, investment into Galt Gardens in Lethbridge will also aid the city’s recovery, according to Randy Boissonnault, Canada’s Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance.

“Parks and public spaces across Alberta communities bring people together, attract visitors to downtown cores and help support countless small businesses,” said Boissonnault.

“Today’s investment in Galt Gardens will help support recovery in Lethbridge by creating more jobs and provide opportunities for residents and visitors to benefit from the local businesses and attractions that are at the heart of this community.”

The $375,000 grant funding is from the Government of Canada’s Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF).

CCRF is a two-year, $500 million national infrastructure program aimed at supporting projects across Canada to “revitalize downtown cores and main streets, reinvent outdoor spaces, create green infrastructure and address accessibility of community space.”

The remaining $125,000 in funding is coming from the city. The city consulted with a community advisory committee for ideas for the project’s initial design.

Members of the community advisory committee included representatives from the Heart of Our City Committee, the Downtown BRZ, Casa, SAAG, Lethbridge Plays, and the Rotary Club of Lethbridge.

The new play space is expected to open in Spring 2023, with construction to take place this summer and fall. For more information, visit the City of Lethbridge website.
