LETHBRIDGE, AB – Changes to snow, ice and street sweeping service levels have been approved by Lethbridge City Council.

At its meeting on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, council members voted unanimously in favour of implementing several service level modifications for snow and ice control.

The changes will include:

  • Beginning in winter 2022-2023 (Phase 1):
    • Snow routes will be declared across the city;
    • Approximately 28 kilometres of existing snow routes will be piloted with plowing to the right.
  • Starting in winter 2023-2024 and continuing into winter 2024-2025 (Phase 2):
    • The City will implement more residential plowing and less snow removal (snow removal will only be in the hospital area, downtown and around school zones);
    • The City will declare snow routes more frequently;
    • The City will provide enforcement during snow events.
    • Administration will report back to the Civic Works Standing Policy Committee in the spring of 2025 about operating budget and resource impacts.

Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen thanked residents who shared their feedback through a variety of public engagement opportunities. Hyggen stated, “through this process, we are able to implement these changes with resident input at the forefront.”

Darwin Juell, General Manager of Transportation at the City of Lethbridge said, “we know some of these proposed changes means we’re asking residents to change their behavior when it comes to how they manage snow and ice at home.”

Juell continued, “this is why we went out to the public to ask for their input and hear their concerns so we could make the appropriate recommendations.”

At its meeting Tuesday, council also voted unanimously in favour of implementing several service level modifications for street sweeping in Lethbridge. These will include:

  • The maintenance of current service levels for all sweeping programs;
  • Enhancing enforcement action;
  • Administration will monitor the new service levels resulting from the 2020 budget reduction initiative and report back to the Civic Works Standing Policy Committee in the spring of 2025 about operating budget and resource impacts.
