LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two members of the Government of Alberta are heading south for a few days this month, including one of Lethbridge’s MLAs.

Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf and Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland MLA Shane Getson will take part in the 76th Annual Meeting of the Midwestern Legislative Conference in Wichita, Kansas.

Neudorf says it will be a crucial opportunity to meet with lawmakers, industry representatives, academics, and other delegates from the Council of State Governments (CSG) Midwest jurisdictions to promote international trade and other key issues.

“Enhancing our ties with the U.S. Midwest is more important now than it has ever been. By working together, we can further grow and accelerate Alberta’s economy,” says Neudorf. “Sharing information, building consensus, and promoting common interests on regional issues – including energy security, water, agriculture, and economic development – is key to our mutual success. This annual forum provides a platform to access key Midwestern state legislators to accomplish this.”

CSG Midwest is a regional multilateral forum that brings together lawmakers and other government leaders from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Not only is the USA Alberta’s largest trading partner, but the Midwest is also the country’s largest trade region for Alberta. Bilateral trade with CSG member states totalled more than $69 billion in 2021

Alberta has been an associate member of CSG Midwest since 2010. Members from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario will also be in attendance.

Neudorf and Getson left for Wichita on Thursday, July 7, 2022, and are expected to return home on July 13.
