UPDATE: Suspect charged in connection to Lethbridge encampment shooting

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Police in Lethbridge have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with a weekend shooting on the south side of the city.

On Sunday, July 10, 2022 just after 8:00 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at an encampment along the 500 block of Stafford Drive South. When police arrived on scene, they found a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to hospital by EMS with non life-threatening injuries. The victim has since been released from hospital.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) investigation found that two men, who are known to each other and are residents of the encampment, were involved in a verbal altercation that resulted in the victim being shot once in the leg before the suspect fled the scene.

After speaking with witnesses, the suspect was identified and arrested without incident a short time later in the area of the 600 block of Stafford Drive North. The firearm that was used in the incident has not been found, as of Monday morning, July 11, 2022.

The LPS obtained a search warrant for the tents and structures in the area of the shooting and were on scene Monday morning. Further efforts, including the use of search and rescue personnel, have been engaged to assist in finding the weapon.

Members of the community are asked to be on the lookout for the weapon and should contact police if they discover the firearm or have additional details on the incident. The LPS can be reached at 403-328-4444.

Police have also contacted social service providers to assist occupants of the encampment who have been affected by the weekend assault. The LPS stated that since this was a targeted incident between people who know each other, there is no evidence to suggest any ongoing risk to the public.

Police will provide another update once charges have been laid.
