LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge man has been charged with multiple offences following a traffic stop.

On July 12, 2022, the Lethbridge Police Service’s (LPS) Crime Suppression Team (CST) spotted a vehicle with a stolen license plate that had failed to stop for police the previous day. Surveillance efforts were made and at roughly 7:30 p.m., a ‘vehicle intervention technique’ was used to pin the vehicle in place after it had stopped in the 200 block of Mayor Magrath Drive North.

The LPS says the driver refused to exit the vehicle and had to be removed by officers. A subsequent search of the vehicle and driver resulted in the seizure of drugs valued at $8,600.

Items included 50.7 grams of methamphetamine, 24.4 grams of cocaine, 5.1 grams of Fentanyl and 108 various pills. Police say they also seized drug trafficking paraphernalia, $1,770 in cash and an axe found within reach of the driver.

33-year-old Warren Shayn McMurtrie has been charged with:

  • Three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking;
  • Two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000;
  • Possession of stolen property under $5,000 (proceeds of crime);
  • Possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public peace;
  • Two counts of operation of a motor vehicle when prohibited;
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
  • Flight from a peace officer.

McMurtrie was also issued multiple traffic violation tickets under the Traffic Safety Act. He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on August 26, 2022.
