Lethbridge wrestler earns bronze at 2022 Junior Pan-American Championships

OAXTEPEC, MEXICO – It was an impressive showing for Canadian wrestlers at the recent 2022 Junior (Under-20) Pan-American (Pan-Am) Championships in Mexico.

The event was held from July 8 to 10, 2022 in Oaxtepec, Mexico. Canadians came home with a total of 15 medals, including one gold, four silvers and 10 bronze.

Lethbridge’s Angelina Ellis-Toddington returned to the Prairies with a bronze. The University of Calgary Dinos athlete went 1-2 in the women’s 62-kilogram round robin to claim her medal.

Fellow Albertan Robbie Ann Pingal of Edmonton won bronze after going 1-2 in her round robin as well, in the 55-kilogram division. Savana Pinsent, from Edmonton WC (originally from White Lake, Ontario), captured bronze at 65-kilograms with a 1-2 round robin record.

St. Catherine, Ontario’s Mia Friesen won a silver medal in the 59-kilogram category. She was in a five-women round robin and finished with a record of 3-1. Her only loss came at the hands of American Nanea Estrella, who went on to win gold. Ajax, Ontario’s Nyla Burgess (Team Impact) earned a silver at 72-kilograms, going 2-1 in her round robin. Her only loss was to gold medalist Haley Ward of the USA.

Hamilton, Ontario’s Serena Di Benedetto won a bronze at 50-kilograms.

Dorchester, Ontario’s Kendall Dettloff was fourth at 53-kilograms, while Fredericton’s Vivian Kutnowski was fourth at 68-kilograms. Port Coquitlam, B.C.’s Gabby Cross was fifth at 57-kilograms.

Vianne Rouleau led the women’s side, capturing gold in the 76-kilogram weight class. The Edmonton athlete was in a four-women round robin and beat all three of her opponents. To secure the gold medal, she earned an 8-1 points win against American Rose Cassioppi.

MEN’S RESULTS

The Canadian men earned a pair of silver medals as well as six bronze.

The first silver was won by Sam Pereira of Edmonton WC, who finished his 97-kilogram round robin with a record of 2-1. The other silver medalist was Windsor, Ontario’s Roger Li. He went 3-1 in his round robin at 125-kilograms to capture silver.

Treye Trotman, from London, took home a bronze medal at 57-kilogram. St. Thomas, Ontario’s Gavin Eldridge won bronze at 61-kilograms.

North York’s Gregor McNeil captured bronze at 65-kilograms, while Hamilton’s Amaan Gulacha picked up bronze at 74-kilograms. Connor Church of Montreal went 2-2 in his round robin to earn bronze and Surrey, B.C.’s Karan Gill took bronze at 92-kilograms.

Aiden Stevenson from Edmonton finished fifth at 86-kilograms.
