Piikani Nation RCMP release details about Highway 3 collision

BROCKET, AB – Piikani Nation RCMP has released more details regarding the multi-vehicle collision that occurred on Friday, July 22, 2022, which resulted in Highway 3 being closed in both directions for several hours.

In a news release, the RCMP says a semi-truck was traveling eastbound on Highway 3 when it rear-ended an SUV and a pick-up truck at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 280 at about 1:50 p.m. on Friday.

The 62-year-old male driver of the pick-up truck was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 62-year-old female passenger was transported via STARS Air Ambulance to Calgary Foothills Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 34-year-old female driver of the SUV and her 2-year-old female passenger were both transported to Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge with unknown injuries.

The driver of the semi-truck was taken to Fort Macleod hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police say Highway 3 re-opened at 8:25 p.m. Friday, after RCMP officers, RCMP collision reconstructionists, and members of the Alberta Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Branch conducted investigations.

At this time, the collision investigation is still ongoing. However, in the release, the RCMP says that drug or alcohol impairment were not believed to be factors in this incident.
