88-year-old Claresholm woman celebrated for losing 122 lbs

She said her age and a need to look after her health is what inspired her to take on a weight loss journey that has been ongoing for more than one full year.

Although she was not able to do much in the way of strenuous exercise, her weight loss mostly came down to diet control.

“I was out a lot, I went different places and done different things, but I just didn’t eat near as much and I watched what I ate. You know, I didn’t need too many sweets and all that kind of stuff,” says Weisensel.

What Weisensel said she enjoyed about being part of TOPS Club is that they do not enforce a strict diet on members, although meal planning is part of it. For her, the most important part of the group was the level of support she received from others who encouraged her to keep going.

She believes that everyone is capable of accomplishing their goals in life, whether they be for weight loss or anything else.

“You just gotta have the get-up and go and tell yourself that you’ve got to lose this weight or you’re just going to weigh more and more and more and then you’ll be worse off than you were before,” says Weisensel. “That’s the only thing I can say because I know I was way over 200 or more pounds, way over that, and I knew I had to just take it off.”

TOPS Club also recognized Murray Springer of Camrose, who lost 42.8 lbs, as the 2021 Alberta King.
