No one entered the Alberta Liberal Party leadership race

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Liberal Party (ALP) will continue to go without a permanent leader for the time being.

The nomination period in the party’s leadership contest has come to a close. Party President Helen McMenamin says no candidates stepped forward.

“There were several interested candidates, but some could not make the commitment for personal reasons. Other young leaders in the party feel they need more time to learn and grow while building the party in other ways before they step into the Leadership role,” says McMenamin.

She says this is a challenging time for the ALP and for politics in the province in general.

Despite this, McMenamin remains confident in the party’s immediate future and says there are “signs of a brighter future for the Alberta Liberal Party.”

”As we talked with Albertans from across the province in the lead-up to the leadership race, we were encouraged by the support we saw for the Alberta Liberal Party,” says McMenamin. “People believe in our message, our values, and our policies. There is genuine interest in building the party and continuing our good work.”

John Roggeveen will continue to serve as Interim Leader.

The Alberta Liberal Board of Directors will discuss the next steps for the party in the coming days.

As of the 2019 Alberta provincial election, the ALP has no sitting MLAs. David Khan was the most recent permanent party leader, serving from June 2017 to November 2020.
