U of L Pronghorn alum signs professional soccer contract

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A former University of Lethbridge (U of L) soccer star has signed a professional contract.

Ellie Kabayama has signed a deal with AaB Kvinde Elitefodbold in the Danish First Division. She made her debut with the club this pas weekend. In her first game, Kabayama started at fullback and helped the team pick up a 6-1 victory in a Cup game.

The Lethbridge Football Club product said, “Signing has been an exciting experience.”

“The team has a competitive and supportive training environment,” Kabayama stated in a release issued by Pronghorn Athletics and Recreation.

She added that, “The club has been very accommodating and Aalborg is a beautiful city to live in.”

“I’m grateful for everyone who’s made this opportunity possible for me.”

Kabayama started all 39 games she played in over three years of U SPORTS eligibility. In her final season with the U of L Pronghorns, she served as captain of the women’s soccer team.

Pronghorn Head Coach Macky Singh said, “It’s tremendously exciting to see Ellie make the progression from university soccer to professional soccer.”

“She has all the attributes to succeed at a professional level and I am very happy that she has been given the opportunity to continue her soccer career beyond the university level,” Singh remarked.

The coach continued, saying, “Ellie’s hard work, work ethic and always continuing to push herself to be better each day is what got her to the next level.”

Singh added, “It’s also fantastic to see a local Lethbridge product go on to play professional soccer and helps creates a pathway for inspire future aspiring girls that are from the local Lethbridge Football Club to University of Lethbridge as a viable option.”

This past summer season, Kabayama played in the BC1 League with Rivers FC in Kamloops.
