TABER, AB – They were only by a hair each, but two communities in Southern Alberta had their hottest August 20 on record this year.

That is according to Environment Canada, which says new daily maximum temperature records were set in both communities.

In the Taber area, the temperature got up to 34.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 33.3 set in 1967.

The mercury in the Milk River area hit 33.9 degrees. This toppled the old record of 33.4 set in 2012.

A total of nine communities in the province had new heat records set. The others include Barrhead (31.2 degrees), Breton (29.5), Edmonton (31.3), Esther (33.3), Tomahawk (29.6), Lloydminster (32.1), and Wainwright (33.4).

Environment Canada explains that an upper ridge continued to bring a high level of heat into Alberta on Saturday.

However, the heat wave that has swept much of the province for the last two weeks has ended.

Following the forecast high of 30 degrees on Sunday, August 21, temperatures are expected to dip back into the 20s.

The forecast highs in Lethbridge on Tuesday and Wednesday are 20 and 23 degrees respectively with a chance of showers each day.
