What’s happening in Lethbridge this week: August 22, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – From Whoop-Up Days to yoga in the garden, or showing your support for the independence of Ukraine, there are plenty of events taking place around Lethbridge this week.

Start your day off right on Tuesday, August 23, as the Interfaith Food Bank hosts the Whoop-Up Days Pancake Breakfast from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the Interfaith Food Bank. Enjoy a traditional pancake breakfast while kids enjoy carnival games, crafts, and face painting. Admission for the pancake breakfast is suggested at $3.00 per adult, $2.00 for children ages 4-12, and children under three are free. All proceeds go towards funding programs and services at the Interfaith Food Bank.

Once you have had your fill of pancakes, make your way to 3 Avenue South or 13 Street North for the Whoop-Up Days Parade. Beginning at Park Place Mall at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23, the parade will make its way towards 3 Avenue South before turning north onto 13 Street North. The final stretch of the parade takes place along 9 Avenue North and ends once it reaches Galbraith Elementary School.The theme of the parade this year is 125 years through history, and the honourable parade marshalls are Chief Roy Fox of Kainai Nation, Chief Stanley Grier from Piikani Nation and Chief Ouray Crowfoot from Siksika Nation.

If you’re not much of a morning person, don’t worry, Whoop-Up Days opens its gates at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, for the general public to come and celebrate. This year marks 125 years of Whoop-Up Days, which has been a time to celebrate summer in Lethbridge. This year will feature over 30 midway rides, an Indigenous cultural celebration, and brand-new this year is the La Galleria art showcase, the “YQL Beach” indoor beach party, and a dedicated kids zone. Whoop-Up Days begins on August 23, and closes its gates at 11:00 p.m. on August 27.

On Wednesday, August 24, Project Sunflower Aid Society is holding the Ukrainian Independence Day Rally at Lethbridge City Hall. Celebrate Ukraine declaring independence from the Soviet Union 31 years ago. On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) issued Ukraine’s Declaration of Independence to separate from the Soviet Union. The rally in Lethbridge begins at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, and attendee’s are encouraged to bring flags and other displays of support.

Need to relax after all the excitement? Check out Wine Down Yoga happening at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden on Thursday, August 25. The evening gets underway at 7 p.m. with a beginner-friendly yoga class, and afterwards stick around and enjoy a glass of wine. Tickets for this event are available on Eventbrite.

Another big Southern Alberta festival beginning on Thursday, August 25 is Taber Cornfest. Happening until August 27, there are lots of ways to have fun during Cornfest. The festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. with a free Barbeque located at 5216, 48 Avenue and then at 4:00 p.m. the Taber Parade takes off. For those interested in rocking out, The Slice Bar and Grill is hosting Rising Sun with Hollow Point and Crimson Caliber on Friday, August 26. Doors open at 8 p.m. and cover is $15 at the door. Rising Sun and Hollow Point are both metal bands from Edmonton, while Crimson Caliber is from Medicine Hat. The show at The Slice is part of Rising Sun’s Western Canada summer tour.
