MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) will assess the guilty verdict on a charge of assault against one of their own.

Const. Myles Steiger was found guilty of assault in connection with an off-duty incident took that place on April 18, 2021.

He received an 18-month suspended sentence.

Last April, the MHPS was informed of an event where an off-duty officer was involved in an altercation with a youth he did not know.

An investigation determined that a youth pulled a prank that involved knocking on the door of the officer’s home and running off.

Steiger left his residence and encountered a different youth nearby where the altercation took place.

The 12-year member of the police service has been on administrative duty since June of last year.

An internal disciplinary process under the Police Act will determine whether further measures are appropriate.
