COALDALE, AB – A significant donation has been made towards the construction of a new multi-use recreation centre in Coaldale.

The McCain Foundation announced a $200,000 commitment to the Coaldale STRONG! Capital Campaign.

McCain Foundation Chair Linda McCain says it is the organization’s goal to support the communities in which McCain Foods employees live and work.

“The McCain Foundation believes accessible, recreation opportunities are fundamental to healthy living, and especially needed in rural communities like Coaldale,” says McCain. “We are happy to be among the many supporters of Coaldale’s new multiuse recreation centre.”

Once completed, the Town of Coaldale says its new recreation centre will be a “centrepiece for recreation, sports, and special events in Southern Alberta.”

The municipality is planning for the facility to include amenities such as:

  • Dry sports: Pickleball, indoor soccer, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and squash
  • Exercise and fitness: Walking/running track, fitness centre with weightlifting, cardio, space for group fitness, and washrooms/locker rooms
  • Childcare and play space: Daycare centre, indoor play structure, outdoor play area
  • Events and breakout space: Banquets, trade shows, special events, meetings, training sessions, parties/group gatherings

Mayor Jack Van Rijn says donations like the one by the McCain Foundation brings them that much closer to making the facility a reality.

“For over two decades, McCain Foods and the McCain Foundation have supported the Town of Coaldale. McCain Foods continues to bolster the local economy by providing jobs for our residents, while the McCain Foundation continues to support the community by providing funds for projects like McCain Park and now, our multi-use recreation centre,” says Van Rijn. “We are extremely thankful for the McCain Foundation’s donation, which will help ensure that we can hit the ground running as soon as the rec centre opens and offer full programming to the community.”

The project has a budget of approximately $18.88 million. That number has increased from the original estimate of $14.1 million due to supply chain issues and costs such as structural steel and both mechanical and electrical work rising.

Back in January 2022, the Town of Coaldale increased the Coaldale STRONG! campaign’s fundraising goal from $1 million to $2 million and dedicated unallocated funs from the 2022 MSI Capital & Canada Community Building Fund to the rec centre.
