LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge City Council has approved renaming the southeast portion of Parkside Drive South to ‘Exhibition Way South’.

Council voted 7 – 2 in favour of the renaming during a council meeting on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.

Acting Mayor Belinda Crowson told council that renaming this stretch of roadway contributes positively to the area.

“The re-naming of this street presents the opportunity to highlight the significance of the Exhibition and will coincide with the Exhibition’s branding for their new facility,” Crowson said. “The re-naming of any existing road has always been a Council decision. This proposal was discussed by the Municipal Names Committee on July 12 [2022] and the group consensus was to bring the proposal forward to City Council.”

The cost to Lethbridge residents comes in at around $2000 for signage and other various expenses.

Councillors Carlson and Dodic were against the renaming. Carlson said he hoped for additional consultation with the public to see what other names residents believe may be better suited for that stretch of road, while Councillor Dodic said the money was better spent elsewhere.

Both the Rocky Mountain Turf Club and the Lethbridge and District Exhibition were in favour of the name change, and because there are no residential properties along the stretch of road, the City says there are no implications with Land Titles in regards to the name change.
