City of Lethbridge to observe National Day of Mourning

Sep 14, 2022 | 2:19 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has announced its plans for Monday, September 19, 2022.

The day is known as the National Day of Mourning in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

She passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at age 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland following a 70-year rule.

As a means of honouring the life and legacy of the Queen, some city services in Lethbridge will be impacted.

City Hall and services conducted out of the facility will be closed, as will the Waste and Recycling Centre and Yard Waste sites.

Limited commercial collection and previously-schedule large item service collections may occur.

Services such as transit, pools, arena, police, fire and EMS, and Community Animal Services will operate on their normal schedules.

The National Day of Mourning was declared a federal holiday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week. That means that employees of the federal government and those working in federally-regulated industries will have the day off.

The Government of Alberta chose to not declare a provincial holiday, but will hold a moment of silence and an outdoor ceremony at the legislature in Edmonton.
