LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes have made a trade ahead of the start of the regular season. The team has acquired 2002-born forward Cole Shepard from the Vancouver Giants.

In exchange, the Giants will receive a third-round pick in the 2023 Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft. The 20-year-old Shepard was originally selected 33rd overall in the second round by Vancouver in the 2017 WHL Draft. He appeared in 78 career games with the Giants, in which he totalled 49 points (18 goals, 31 assists) and 28 penalty minutes over two seasons.

Last season, he recorded 20 points, with seven goals and 13 assists, along with 12 penalty minutes in 28 games. Shepard added one assist in three post-season match-ups for the Giants.

Shepard has some familial connections to the Hurricanes, as his older brother Jackson spent the 2018-2019 season with the Lethbridge club.

Hurricanes’ General Manager Peter Anholt said, “We’re excited to add Cole to our group.”

“He is a legitimate top-six forward and we expect him to bring something to our group offensively.”

Currently, the overage forward is attending the Vancouver Canucks Main Camp. He appeared in two games for the Canucks during their Rookie Camp at the Young Stars Tournament.

The Hurricanes will open their 2022-2023 regular season on Saturday, September 24, 2022 when they visit the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
