Six inductees named for Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Half a dozen Southern Albertans are being recognized for their contributions to the world of sport.

The Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame (LSHF) has announced its 2022 Inductees.

LSHF Board Chair Paul Kingsmith says this year’s lineup includes an incredible class of diverse inductees that represent both athletic excellence and community spirit.

“This induction class celebrates both those who have carried Lethbridge’s spirit to accomplishments around the world, and those who have committed to growing sports and athletes right here in our city. Their stories should inspire others to want to follow in their footsteps and we are excited to celebrate them,” says Kingsmith.

This year’s induction banquet theme is “Lethbridge’s Olympic history,” which will be celebrated by a pair of sibling inductees and a yet-to-be-announced special guest speaker.

The 2022 Inductees are as follows:

  • Jim Steacy – Track and Field (Athlete)
    • Competed at the 2008, 2012, and 2015 Olympics in hammer throw events
    • Undefeated in weight throw competitions in five seasons with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns
    • Voted the greatest Pronghorn of all time in celebration of the Pronghorns’ 50th anniversary
    • Won five Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships
    • Set a hammer throw record of 79.13 metres in 2008 that still stands
  • Heather Steacy – Track and Field (Athlete)
    • Competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in hammer throw events
    • Won four Canada West championships, two national championships, and Canadian Interuniversity Sports bronze and silver medals with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns
    • First female Pronghorn athlete to throw more than 20 metres in the weight throw
  • Dennis Chief Moon – Boxing (Athlete)
    • Won the 57 kg title at the 1971 Canadian National Boxing Championships
    • Competed at the 1971 Pan Am Games
    • Trained young boxers at the St. Paul’s residential school
  • Scott Oikawa – Baseball (Builder)
    • Coach of the double-A level American Legion Lethbridge Elks for more than 25 years
    • Won the Montana State Coach of the Year award in 1995, 1999, and 2004
    • Many coached athletes competed in college and minor pro programs in Canada and the United States
  • Errol Smith – Soccer (Builder)
    • Coached teams in the Lethbridge Soccer Association (LSA) for 10 years, winning a provincial championship
    • Advocacy lead to the creation of the Lethbridge Soccer Centre in 1997, later renamed the Servus Sports Centre
    • President of the LSA from 2000-2007
    • Part of the organizing committee for the 2011 U16 national Championships in Lethbridge
  • Jody Fisher Meli – Curling (Special)
    • Helped to organize sporting events in Lethbridge including the 2005 Alberta Women’s Curling Championships, 2007 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, 2012 Ford World Women’s Curling Championships, and 2019 Pioneer Hi-Bred World Men’s Curling Championship
    • Named the Kinsmen Sports Person of the Year in 2012

The ceremony for the 2020 class was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and nobody entered the local hall of fame in 2021.

The 2022 induction banquet will take place on Friday, October 28, 2022. Ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.
