Record population growth in Alberta & Canada

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Statistics Canada says the provincial and national populations are surging.

As of July 1, 2022, the country was home to 38,929,902 people, a growth of 282,982 (+0.7%) from April 1.

This represents an increase of more than 3,100 people per day during the second quarter of 2022.

“This was the highest growth in the number of people in Canada of any quarter since the addition of Newfoundland (see the note to readers) to the Confederation in 1949, which led to the highest population growth rate since the third quarter of 1957 (+0.8%) around the height of the baby boom,” reads a notice from Statistics Canada.

The agency adds that nearly all of this growth (94.5%) was due to international migration as 269,305 people entered Canada.

“This was the highest increase from international migration since comparable records have existed and was 93,000 higher than in the third quarter of 2019 (+175,907), the next highest quarter on record,” says Statistics Canada.

The majority of immigration growth came from non-permanent residents such as those who are asylum seekers or hold work, study, or other permits.

During the second quarter, 93,563 people were born in Canada while 77,886 died, resulting in a net increase of 15,677.

Alberta now has a population of 4,543,111 as of the third quarter of 2022.

The provincial population has grown by 40,253 since the previous quarter, the highest amount ever for a single three-month period.

Alberta experienced growth in inter-provincial migration of 9,857.

The province saw an increase of 99,338 people over the last year.
