Town of Taber approves energy efficiency rebate program

Sep 29, 2022 | 10:50 AM

TABER, AB – Any residents of Taber who are looking to get newer, more efficient appliances for their homes can now apply for financial assistance from their local government.

At the regular meeting of Taber Town Council on Monday, September 26, 2022, members voted unanimously to adopt the Clean Energy Improvement Tax (CEIT).

Mayor Andrew Prokop clarifies that no new taxes are being imposed on the people of Taber. Rather, it will help eligible residents to afford energy efficient appliances.

“It’s just part of that natural trend, I think that people are more and more aware of [environmental issues] all the time,” says Prokop.

Residents in single-family or multi-unit homes can qualify for funding under the CEIT program when they have new appliances that increase energy efficiency or renewable energy on that property installed.

Eligible appliances include HVAC, water heaters, doors, windows, insulation, air sealing, renewable energy generators such as solar panels, lighting, or other clean energy improvements.

The capital cost of the appliance must be between $3,000 and $50,000. The town has established a funding formula that takes into consideration the cost of the item and professional services, as well as its probable lifetime.

The municipality will borrow up to $1.6 million over the next four years for the program.

Interested residents can contact the Town of Taber for more information on the CEIT, including how to apply for it.
