Ottawa to spend $3.8 million on residential energy retrofits in Lethbridge

Oct 3, 2022 | 2:25 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) will allocate $25.6 million to make homes in four Alberta communities greener.

Funding through the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) will allow residents to take advantage of new home energy retrofit financing programs.

The City of Lethbridge will receive a total of $3,814,300.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen says this investment will ensure the city can provide assistance to residents to make real and tangible energy efficiency and sustainability improvements to homes.

“It also means job creation in our community and with 20 per cent of this funding dedicated to supporting affordable housing providers with their properties, we’ll see some of the most vulnerable in our community experience improved facilities,” says Hyggen.

Hyggen continues, “Thanks to the $3.8 million in grant and loan funding, we’re going to see a reduction in our overall carbon footprint, and that supports our environmental responsibility focus as a City Council.”

Residential property owners will soon be able to apply for loans for energy efficiency upgrades. Loan repayments can be made as part of a homeowner’s property taxes.

Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson says this investment will not only help with environmental efforts but support sustainable economic growth.

“Today’s announcement with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities will help our partners in Calgary, St. Albert, Lethbridge and Canmore deliver more efficient and comfortable homes that will lower bills for Canadian families, take action against climate change and create good jobs for workers. The Government of Canada is pleased to support these initiatives,” says Wilkinson.

The City of Calgary will receive $15 million in funding, the City of St. Albert will get $5,017,400, and the Town of Canmore will benefit from $1,622,960 in funding.

The City of Lethbridge told LNN in a statement that they hope to provide further details on the program later this week.
