Canada and Japan launch formal talks on intelligence-sharing pact

OTTAWA — Canada and Japan have launched talks aimed at sharing military intelligence

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly met today with her Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi in Tokyo.

The two adopted a plan to boost co-operation on defence and economic security.

That includes formal talks on an intelligence-sharing pact, in the face of growing threats from China and Russia.

Japan and Canada will also hold joint military exercises, and some with the United States.

Both countries say they are trying to shore up the rules-based international order that Russia violated by invading Ukraine.
