Climate change fears high but vary by region, new poll suggests

Oct 13, 2022 | 12:09 PM

OTTAWA — Millions of Canadians in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario will receive their quarterly carbon price rebate payments on Friday.

But a new poll suggests residents of most of those provinces are the least likely in Canada to be worried about climate change or believe it is caused by human activity.

The data is contained in a poll published this week by Leger that is based on an online survey it did last weekend.

It suggests fewer people in Ontario and the Prairies believe climate change is caused by people, compared with respondents in Atlantic Canada and Quebec.

It also suggests people in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are less concerned about climate change than those who live in the rest of Canada.

The federal carbon price on consumers is only charged in the three Prairie provinces and Ontario because those are the only provinces without a provincial levy that meets the federal standard.
