LETHBRIDGE, AB – Sofia Woons, a student from Agnes Davidson School in Lethbridge, won this year’s Fire Chief for the Day contest.

The contest had children from 23 different schools across the city bring home a fire escape exercise to work through with their parents in order to make sure each room of the home had at least two ways of escape in case a fire broke out.

Woons won a firefighter outfit, a pizza party for her class to celebrate with her, and on Saturday, October 22, 2022, will be picked up by a fire truck to go to a station to have fun and lunch.

Marc Woons, Sofia’s father, says, “We’re quite proud of her [Sofia] that she enters contests whenever she can. I think this is the purpose of the whole program is to ensure that kids are coming home with something that reminds us that we have a fire plan.”

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services Chief Fire Marshall Heath Wright says the Fire Chief for the Day program has been great at spreading awareness to families across Lethbridge.

“It’s a resource we use to remind parents that fire safety messaging in the household.” Wright says, “It’s a refresher for parents as well to make sure that fire messaging is always on the mind of everybody in the household and remind where muster points are, how to get out and make sure we have two escapes from every room in the house.”

The Fire Chief of the Day program has been around for 10 years during Fire Prevention Week.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week motto is, “Fire won’t wait, plan your escape.”

Wright wants to remind everyone to make sure batteries are full in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and to have a small fire extinguisher available in case of small trash fires.
