LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new holistic support program has been launched for student-athletes at the University of Lethbridge.

Pronghorn Athletics has announced the Designated Athlete Support Hall (DASH) for the Fall and Winter semesters. It is being organized by women’s soccer players Lucy Mundy and Anneke De Klerk.

DASH is a space for Pronghorn student-athletes to visit on a weekly basis.

Every Wednesday afternoon, beginning in November, members of Pronghorn teams can use the space for their academic studies and to share experiences. Workshops will be available with guest speakers.

Lucy Mundy stated in a news release, “As University of Lethbridge Pronghorn student-athletes, we have increased demands on our time, and the balance between grades and sport is extremely difficult.”

She added, “Rather than seeking support, it is easy to prioritize your sport over your academics.”

Mundy said, “We want to see athletes succeed together and have a place to gather, study, and develop with like-minded individuals.”

DASH workshops will focus on areas of student support like:

  • Time management
  • Study skills/habits
  • Academic planning
  • Campus resources
  • Stress management
  • Healthy lifestyle practices
  • Goal setting
  • Decision making
  • Conflict resolution
  • Team building
  • Community advocacy

Anneke De Klerk echoed Mundy’s comments, saying it can be challenging as a student-athlete to balance academics with sport.

De Klerk said, “DASH is designed to ease this challenge as it provides student-athletes with the support necessary for success, as well as a sense of community within Pronghorn athletics.”

She added, “Ultimately, DASH will help to unify Pronghorn athletes one study session at a time.”

Manager of Athletics Spencer Pommells said, “We know that demands of University student-athletes are increasing as athletic departments continue to pursue high performance, and it is crucial that we provide the necessary support structures for positive student-athlete development.”
