LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was one year ago that Mayor Blaine Hyggen and Councillors Mark Campbell, Jeff Carlson, Belinda Crowson, Rajko Dodic, John Middleton-Hope, Nick Paladino, Ryan Parker, and Jenn Schmidt-Rempel took their oath of office and formed Lethbridge City Council.

Following the 2021 municipal elections, members were sworn in on October 25, 2021.

Mayor Hyggen says, “It’s been a great honour and privilege for myself and our dedicated councillors to serve Lethbridge residents for this first year.”

The Council’s work has been based on the Gateway to Opportunity 2022 Action Plan.

Councillor Schmidt-Rempel says, “One of the first accomplishments was putting our strategic plan together; coming together as a council with everything that we all campaigned on and getting that into one cohesive document. Next, we would be looking at doctor recruitment. We will be seeing 17 more doctors before the end of March.”

A news release from the City of Lethbridge highlights some work that City Council has been working on including:

  • Launching a land acknowledgement Oki & Welcome video
  • The Mayor’s Community Hockey Challenge to support local food banks
  • Lethbridge hosting the 2022 Tim Hortons Brier at the ENMAX Centre
  • Supporting a family physician marketing and recruitment campaign
  • Steps to coordinate with the Provincial government to support the vulnerable population
  • Detailed analysis to possibly implement a Ward Electoral System by the 2025 municipal election
  • Receiving a Third Bridge River Crossing Review from Administration
  • Continuation of cityLINK Transit system
  • Investment and grand re-opening of Lethbridge Airport
  • The grand opening of the new Festival Square Market Plaza
  • The return of in-person Canada Day celebrations for 2022

  • Supporting the Legion’s Salute our Veterans banner project
  • Ongoing meetings with Provincial Ministers on a range of topics including addiction recovery and EMS dispatch
  • In addition to the ongoing work of the Lethbridge Police Commission, Mayor Hyggen has regular meetings with Lethbridge Police Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh to discuss possible solutions to safety concerns in Lethbridge

Mayor Hyggen says, “Our City Council is aware of many challenges facing our community including community safety, social issues, affordable housing, budgetary impacts and doctor shortages, just to name a few.”

Hyggen continues, “As we head into our second year together, we are committed and ready to tackle these issues, continue advocacy efforts to the Provincial government and continue working towards making Lethbridge the best city it can be.”

Councillor Middleton-Hope says he would like to focus on helping the homeless, “One of the challenges that I would like to see more work on is the encampments. It’s not where we would hope it to be at this point in time.”

The council will also be focusing on bringing in and retaining doctors in Lethbridge, and showcasing the Economic Trade Centre, which the city approved in August 2020 and is currently under construction.
