Success for local speed skaters at recent competitions

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Speed skaters from Lethbridge performed well at recent events across the country.

Kaleb Muller took part in four events at the 2022 Canadian Long Track Championships in Quebec City between Thursday, October 13, 2022 and Sunday, October 16. Muller placed seventh in the mass start, eighth in the 1,500 metre, sixth in the 5,000 metre, and fourth in the 10,000 metre event. His performance qualified him to represent Team Canada at the upcoming World Cup.

Mikka Eaves competed at the Canadian Championships as well, for short track speed skating. She won three of the races she was in and finished 32nd overall, and 19th among junior aged athletes.

This past weekend, members of the Lethbridge Speed Skating Club took part in events across western Canada. Medicine Hat hosted the first time Lime Short Track Racing Series of the year on Saturday, October 22. Seven local athletes competing. Aiden Cho, Olivia Cho, Theo Hazendonk, and Ryker Olsen were participating in their first-ever competitions. Zoe Wesseling and Claire Peake placed fourth and fifth in Division Two, while Zosia Adelman earned a bronze medal.

The Saskatoon Prairie Opener was a two-day short track event on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23. Gavin Ogilvie won gold in the Youth 11 to 13 division. He crossed the finish line first in all nine events he competed in. In the process, Ogilvie set four personal best records.

To cap off the weekend, skaters from Lethbridge competed in the Oktoberfest Long Track event in Calgary from Friday, October 21 to Sunday, October 23. Braeden Kremenik, Riley Vandenburgh, Denise Wesseling, and Mitchell Wesseling all established new personal bests in various events.

Zachary Adelman won the 1,500 metre and 3,000 metre distances in the Junior Male 14/15 category.

Next up for area speed skaters is the Bridge Bolt at the ATB Centre in Lethbridge on Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30. The event will serve as the qualifier for youth speed skaters hoping to compete for Team Alberta at the Canada West Championships in Saskatoon in March 2023.
