College and university sports preview: October 28, 2022

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s another weekend full of action for Lethbridge College Kodiaks and University of Lethbridge (U of L) Pronghorns teams.

LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE KODIAKS

The Kodiaks men’s and women’s soccer teams host the 2022 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Soccer Championships this weekend. The tournament takes place at Comet Stadium in Raymond from Friday, October 28, 2022 to Sunday, October 30.

The men’s soccer team finished with a regular season record of 3-3-4, while the women’s team finished the season with a record of 7-4-1.

The women’s team plays Keyano College at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, October 28 to open their tournament schedule. The men’s team faces The King’s University Eagles in their first game of the tournament at 2:50 p.m. on Friday, October 28. A full tournament schedule is available at the ACAC website.

The Kodiaks cross country team will be in Edmonton at Concordia University this weekend. Student-athletes will compete in the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships on Saturday, October 29.

The regular season continues for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The women’s team faces Briercrest College in Saskatchewan at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28. It’s a rematch between the two teams at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29.

The men’s basketball team will also be on the road against Briercrest College. They play at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28 and have a 3:00 p.m. rematch on Saturday, October 29.

In other Lethbridge College Kodiaks news, Kitawna Sparks of the women’s basketball team was named the college’s female Athlete of the Week.

Sparks had 24 points in the Kodiaks’ season opening 73-68 win against Olds College on Friday, October 21. On Saturday, October 22, Sparks had 28 points in a 81-73 win against Olds College.

Tyler Chernishenko of the men’s volleyball team earned the male Athlete of the Week honour.

On Friday, October 21, the men’s volleyball team beat Olds College 3-0 and followed that up with a 3-1 victory on Saturday, October 22. Chernishenko contributed a team high 11 digs in the Friday win and another team high of nine digs on Saturday.

UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The U of L Pronghorns women’s basketball team is off this weekend. They start the Canada West regular season on Friday, November 4 on home court against the University of Victoria.

The men’s basketball team, however, travels across the border for two games to conclude their exhibition schedule. At 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 28, the Pronghorns will be in Helena, Montana to face Carroll College. On Saturday, October 29, they will be in Havre, Montana for a 4:00 p.m. meeting with Montana State University – Northern. The team will start their regular season on Friday, November 4 in Lethbridge against the University of Victoria.

The U of L swim team is in Calgary for the University of Calgary Dinos Cup. The event takes place Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29.
