LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Government says 99% of crops across the province have been harvested.

Favourable conditions meant Alberta farmers were two to three weeks ahead in harvest progress for the second straight year.

Alberta’s final crop report for the 2022 growing season indicated significantly higher yields, about 10% above the five-year average.

The highest yields were harvested in the south region, which were 18% above the five-year average.

Overall crop quality was above the five-year average for hard red spring wheat, canola, and dry peas, while durum wheat and oats were lower. Malt and feed barley were on par with the five-year average.

According to the report, soil moisture reserves declined because of dry conditions in late summer and fall this year. As of October 11, 2022, surface soil moisture levels were rated as 40% poor, 32% fair, 27% good and only 1% excellent.

The report states that soil moisture reserves and surface water supplies are expected to build up to acceptable levels before the 2023 growing season.

In a news release, Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation stated that despite drying conditions and increasing costs, farmers continue to show their resiliency.

Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Nate Horner said, “Alberta’s producers have faced a number of challenges over the years, but through their hard work and dedication, continue to show the immense value of the agriculture sector and the contributions this industry makes to our economy and communities.”

The Alberta crop report is developed through a partnership between Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, and the Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen.
