LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College will take an active role in forum management for the Metaverse Standards Forum, a venue to allow easier collaboration between companies around the world.

Mike McCready, Program Research Chair for the Spatial Technologies Applied Research and Training (START) Centre says joining the forum as a Principal member is a huge step for the college.

“It demonstrates our continued leadership and commitment in the world of spatial and immersive technologies,” McCready said.

The Metaverse Standards Forum is open to any company, standards organization, or post-secondary institution, with the goal of fostering development of interoperability standards.

McCready says the forum is not responsible for creating the standards, but it will encourage their evolution and adoption.

“When you click on a link to go from a website to another website, it is a standard that makes it possible,” McCready says. “The metaverse is similar, but more complex. For example, in the metaverse you’ll have an identity and avatar. How your identity and avatar (including clothing) move from one location to another location in the metaverse will only be possible with standards.”

He says the Lethbridge College START Centre will take an active role on the forum, and will also encourage other Alberta-based organizations to join.
